Honors Major English Disciplines Literature in English, British Isles Abstract This paper will discuss, compare, and contrast the three main works of the Blasket Island authors: Peig, by Peig Sayers, The Islandman by Tomas OCrohan, and Twenty Years A-Growing by Maurice OSullivan. This, the first of two podcasts on Peig, looks at her life in Dunquin Co Kerry in the late 19th century a time when the Great Famine still haunted Irish Society. She also recorded vivide accounts of major events in Irish history - The Land War, the Great War, the 1916 Rising and the sweeping change that transformed Ireland in the 20th century. Here is a story as unforgettable as it is simple. Her life story is full of details which today leave us pondering how our ancestors survived. Here is one of the classics of modern Gaelic literature-the autobiography of Peig Sayers, a remarkable woman who lived forty years at the edge of survival on barren Great Blasket Island, and who came to be recognized as one of the last of Irelands traditional storytellers. Later in her life Peig would recall the intriguing details of what is now a lost world. However life in this remote corner of Ireland is both fascinating and at times unbelievable from a 21st century standpoint. When Peig Sayers died in 1958, she as regarded as one of Ireland's greatest storytellers and folklorists.īorn in Dunquin in 1873 Co Kerry she grew up in the aftermath of the Great Famine in extreme poverty. Peig was, he said, one of the hidden souls of Ireland seldom shown to the stranger and recalled how her voice settled in the depths of his soul, ‘more beautiful than I can describe.’ 1 Ward was welcomed into Peig’s cabin and sat by the fireside with her and her family where they exchanged stories. A Mac OS X version was also released in December 2011. Mafia II is the standalone sequel to Mafia and was developed by 2K Czech and published by 2K Games for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in August 2010. The Mafia series has also been commercially successful, with combined lifetime sales of over 17 million units. The antagonists are commonly characters who have betrayed the protagonist or their organisation, or characters who have the most impact impeding the protagonist's progress.Īll games in the franchise have been well received by critics, with praise for their complex narratives, open world design, and focus on realism, although Mafia III reviewed significantly worse than the others due to its repetitive gameplay structure. The series centers on different protagonists who become involved with the Mafia in one way or another, either attempting to rise through its ranks or bring it down for wronging them. However, most of the games include a bonus Free Ride mode, which allows players to trigger missions from the open world. Gameplay focuses on an open world environment where players complete missions to progress an overall story, as well as engage in various side activities, albeit in a more linear manner than other open world series such as Grand Theft Auto. Games in the Mafia series are set in fictional locales modeled after real American cities, and typically feature historical settings, from Great Depression-era Lost Heaven in the first game, to 1960s New Bordeaux in Mafia III. The franchise consists of three mainline installments, along with a remake of the first game, a remastered version of the second game, and two spin-offs for mobile devices. Since the third installment, however, the games are developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. Mafia is a series of action-adventure games originally created and developed by 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks). While the story is appropriately bleak, it isn’t particularly thorough or engaging. To Soul Nomad’s credit, players are given the option to stave off or indulge Gig’s blood thirst from the onset, with a separate path dedicated to those who wish to spread disorder throughout the land. Facing the ethical quandary of utilizing Gig’s power against his own monsters to save the world, the protagonist also risks succumbing to Gig’s dominance to destroy the world. Although Gig and his World Eaters have long been dormant, the giants have since re-awakened and the player is forced to rely on Gig’s powers to defeat the World Eaters. This malevolent being called Gig happens to be the foul-mouthed master of three gargantuan World Eaters who was defeated in battle 200 years prior, upon which he was sealed away within the sword and has since eagerly been plotting his revenge. Players control an unnamed silent protagonist who is given a black sword, which turns out to be possessed by an evil spirit. Soul Nomad begins in a hidden village tucked away in the land of Raide, where two young villagers have their coming of age marked by being entrusted with weapons from the village elder to protect the land. Unfortunately, this release of Soul Nomad is simply a bare bones port of the PS2 version with little to no quality-of-life or graphical improvements, leaving this unusually grim tale firmly rooted in the past. The title features some interesting, if not entirely successful, tweaks to the SRPG genre. While RPGamers had additional opportunities to try out its compilation companion Phantom Brave, this marks the first time Soul Nomad has been ported or released elsewhere. First released for the PlayStation 2 in 2007, Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is now available as the second part of the Prinny Presents: NIS Classics Volume 1 compilation. Posted in 68000, BasiliskII, disk images, hard disks, m68k, Macintosh, MacOS, scsi | 1 Reply Missing link for Basilisk I found So yeah, lesson learned, don’t go cheap on flash. Not only does the Performa not crash with an ISO image but it’s pretty darn quick! Well worth the purchase as all my weird issues seemingly just disappear! A bit pricy but it turns out totally worth it! I scored this SanDisk Extreme 32GB for £15. As a matter of fact if the SD card was plugged in at powerup with an ISO image it would crash the Mac. I had been using this Kingston generic 8GB card, and it had frequent timeouts writing/reading on the Performa. I had been using some generic 8GB microSD card on this, and while it seemed mostly fine on the Macintosh Plus, I had since managed to score a Performa 6400. I know it’ll be slow but I do want to see MacMiNT run on this thing! Maybe I’ll find/order the needed diode and make the DB25 bus powered eliminating one cable.Ī long long long time ago I did own a Macintosh Plus, with 4Mb of RAM, although I mostly used it as a terminal, since it powered up quickly (it was the mid 90s!) and doesn’t take up that much space, so maybe I can slave it to an ESP32? Obviously, the next step will be to get a proper screwdriver to open this thing, figure out how to discharge the CRT so I don’t kill myself, and add some additional RAM. I booted off the diskette, and amazingly the floppy drive worked! And in about a minute I had booted up, and it saw the hard disk! I dragged the System folder over the hard disk, and rebooted, and yeah it booted right up! So I broke down and ordered a pre-installed diskette with MacOS 6.08. I’m not sure what the problem was, it’s possible it was the filesystem on the card, or some other issued with the Macintosh, I have no idea. I tried installing a MacOS 6.0.8 manually, but it crashed saying the system folder was corrupt, and then it just went empty disk mac on further boots. I first tried MacOS 7.0.1, but it would boot up greeting me with the error that needs more than 1Mb of ram. The real trick was installing the operating system. To prepare the virtual hard disk, I used Cockatrice III, since the Macintosh Quadra 800 emulation includes SCSI, which let me create a raw disk image, partition it, and format it under MacOS 8.1. It’s what the Bluescsi want’s so don’t fight it! I named the file simply ‘HD10_512.hda’ which specifies it’s a hard disk, SCSI ID 1, target 0, 512 bytes/sector and it’s a ‘hda’ image. I’m a bit worried about opening up this thing as I’ms suspecting the plastics are a log weaker than they look, so I opted for just using a USB cable to power the device.Īnyways let me cut to the chase, I have an 8Gb Micro SD card that I formatted ExFAT (the documentation says Fat32 will work, but I found it might work once, but it’ll definitely never work after a reboot), with a single file emulating a 100Mb hard disk (Luxurious!). Bluescsi module on the back of the Macintosh Plusĭocumentation on the bluescsi is scant, but it seems that a diode needs to be soldered onto the Macintosh Plus motherboard to enable bus power, so you don’t need an external USB power source. I’ve heard of various SCSI emulators out there, and decided to go with a bluescsi v1 with a DB25 interface as they are generally cheaper, and the Macintosh Plus isn’t exactly all that fast so the effort of the v2 is mostly lost. I’m more surprised that someone was using this in 1989 and didn’t take the plunge and upgrade the machine to the full 4Mb of ram.Īnyways I have this chunk of plastic and glass on a desk, but I can’t do a thing with it. And I can’t say that I’m all that surprised that a hard disk from 1989 is broken. And not like dead dead, but dead dead dead! After I freed the disk from the external enclosure, and tried to power it on, stand alone, the PSU refused to start as the disk has a hard short in the board somewhere. It included the larger keyboard, original mouse, and an external 20MB hard disk. This was rather unexpected, but this auction for a loaded Macintosh Plus had shown up, and it was shipping local, and very cheap for what it was. Kai, Daniel’s aforementioned spouse, is one of those beings, rescued by Esther and her Hex some five years before and brought home to heal, who fell in love with Daniel and decided to stay. She carries labour organising literature in her pockets in case she finds someone, in the realms across the Beyond, who might benefit from it, for many of the realms connected to the Beyond and their trading emporia support slavery and the trafficking of sapient beings. She comes across as a complicated woman, one with a thorny history, deeply attached to her family – particularly Daniel, his spouse Kai, and their children – and vigorously opposed to injustice in all its forms. It’s time to get the band back together for one more gig – but, to stretch a metaphor, if anyone official catches them playing, there’ll be hell to pay.Įsther is a compelling and engaging character. Neither she nor the rest of her Hex are supposed to travel the Beyond for another ten years, and Esther hasn’t spoken to some of them since that happened.Įven more unfortunately, Daniel’s just been kidnapped, and in order to get him back, Esther’s going to have to traverse the Beyond, with the team whose livelihoods were badly affected by her choices. Esther has never met an injustice she didn’t want to work at putting right, and in this case her sense of justice and her ability to cover her tracks weren’t pulling in the same direction. Esther, unfortunately, got her Hex suspended by the Concilium a year ago. There’s an inter-realm body that regulates Hexes, known as the Concilium: we don’t learn exactly what powers and dominions make up this body, but it certainly includes dragons, which appear to be the most powerful of the beings that travel between realms. Her son, Daniel, is Keeper for their Hex: he holds the Keep that forms an entry and exit point from Earth to the Beyond, and which acts as a safe zone in that perilous space. Most people on Earth know nothing about the Beyond, but it runs in Esther’s family. It delighted me, but let’s be honest: one usually expects a novella to be a little more contained.Įsther Green is 60, and a Lantern: part of one of the six-people ‘‘Hexes’’ that can navigate between realms through the inimical emptiness of the Beyond. It certainly is for me! For others, it might prove a source of confusion, for even as I enjoyed it, I sometimes found myself a little startled by the way the edges of the world – and the implications of the story – kept opening up into wider and wider vistas. ‘‘Epic’’ is the word I most associate with her work, and into this slender novella Elliott has packed a whole trilogy’s amount of worldbuilding, implication, and possibility. The Keeper’s Six is Elliott’s latest outing. From epic fantasy with the high politics and romantic entanglements of the Spiritwalker trilogy, the convulsions of societies in transition of the Crossroads trilogy, or the more tightly focused but nonetheless still epic story of colonialism, extreme sports, and revolution in Court of Fives and its sequels, to the high-stakes, high-energy epic space opera of Unconquerable Sun, Elliott’s work is always compelling. Kate Elliott is a writer whose work I have long enjoyed and admired for its humanity and its scope, even when that work tackled subjects I couldn’t quite enjoy.
